MPC Trading Hours: Best Sessions for Marathon Petroleum

MPC has three distinct trading windows. Pre-Market runs 10:00–14:30 UTC, the Regular session runs 14:30–21:00 UTC, and After-Hours extends from 21:00–01:00 UTC.

The Regular session is where the real action is. NYSE volume in the regular window accounts for roughly 70–80% of MPC's daily traded shares. Pre-market and after-hours sessions do exist and are accessible through most brokers, but liquidity is fractional. A 500-share pre-market order that would fill instantly at 15:00 UTC might sit for 30 seconds at 11:00 UTC — and move price against you in the process.

After-hours matters specifically around earnings. Marathon Petroleum typically reports quarterly results after the close, meaning the 21:00–01:00 UTC window can see sharp, news-driven moves. Outside earnings periods, after-hours volume on MPC is thin enough that most setups don't justify the wider spreads.

In my experience, breakout setups on MPC that fail during the midday lull — roughly 17:00–19:00 UTC — frequently resolve cleanly in this final window.

Avoid the 17:00–19:00 UTC midday stretch if you're scalping or trading tight ranges. Volume drops by 40–60% compared to the open, and MPC can chop sideways for extended periods. Swing traders holding multi-day positions don't need to worry about this window, but intraday traders do.
