You've spotted a setup on Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) at 9:00 AM your time — but the chart is barely moving, spreads are wide, and your order fills at a price you didn't expect. The problem isn't your analysis. It's timing. Understanding which session you're trading in changes everything about execution quality.
Sessioni di trading
SPOT — Sessioni di trading Forex (UTC)
Orari di apertura e chiusura di ciascun mercato.
Orari in UTC. Gli orari effettivi possono variare per broker e ora legale.
SPOT trades on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which structures its day into three distinct windows. Pre-market runs from 10:00 to 14:30 UTC — this is extended-hours trading, where participation is limited mostly to institutional desks and algorithmic systems. Regular session opens at 14:30 UTC and closes at 21:00 UTC; this is the core NYSE trading day. After-hours extends from 21:00 to 01:00 UTC, capturing reactions to earnings releases or late-breaking news.
Each window carries a different risk profile. Regular session hours attract the highest volume, tightest bid-ask spreads, and the most reliable price discovery. The other two windows can produce sharp, fast moves — but on thin order books where a single large trade can shift price by 0.5% or more in seconds.
The first 90 minutes of the regular session — 14:30 to 16:00 UTC — consistently produce the highest volume on SPOT. In New York that's 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET. For London traders, that's 15:30 to 17:00 BST. For traders in Tokyo, it falls at 23:30 to 01:00 JST, which is a late-night window but one worth setting alerts for.
A second liquidity surge typically appears in the final hour, 20:00 to 21:00 UTC (4:00–5:00 PM ET), as institutional desks close or rebalance positions before the bell. Between 17:00 and 19:00 UTC, volume on SPOT often drops 40–60% compared to the open — this mid-session lull is where slippage risk quietly climbs even when spreads look acceptable on the surface.
Spotify reported its Q1 2024 earnings before market open on April 23, 2024, triggering a 12% gap at the 14:30 UTC open. That kind of volatility is why the open-to-close window matters: you need the full liquidity of the regular session to enter and exit efficiently around events like these.

💡 Consiglio di Winston
Counterintuitively, the spread on SPOT during pre-market can run 3–5x wider than during the regular session — even when price action looks calm.
Counterintuitively, the spread on SPOT during pre-market can run 3–5x wider than during the regular session — even when price action looks calm. With fewer market makers actively quoting, the difference between the best buy and sell price expands. A spread that sits at $0.05 during regular hours might balloon to $0.20 or more at 11:00 UTC.
After-hours spreads behave similarly. Post-earnings reactions after 21:00 UTC can look attractive on a chart, but executing a 500-share order in that window often means significant price impact. The apparent opportunity can be partially consumed by the cost of entry alone.
Pulsar Terminal displays real-time spread data directly on your MetaTrader 5 panel, so you can immediately see when SPOT's spread is drifting above its regular-session baseline — a reliable signal that you're operating outside optimal liquidity conditions.
