CMC Markets

CMC Markets has been in the game since 1989 — longer than most brokers on this list. Listed on the London Stock Exchange (FTSE 250, ticker CMCX) and regulated by 8 authorities including 6 Tier-1, it carries a 99/99 Trust Score on ForexBrokers.com. The instrument catalog spans 12,000+ products across forex, indices, shares, commodities, crypto, and treasuries. MT5 is available, but the broker's proprietary Next Generation platform is where the real edge lies. Here's how it all stacks up for MT5 traders.

Regulation, Trust, and Corporate Structure

Founded by Lord Peter Cruddas (who still holds ~59% and serves as CEO), CMC Markets operates under banking and financial services licenses across 8 jurisdictions: FCA (UK, ref 173730), ASIC (Australia, 238054), BaFin (Germany, 154814), MAS (Singapore), CIRO (Canada), FMA (New Zealand, FSP41187), DFSA (Dubai, F002740), and BMA (Bermuda). Six of these are Tier-1 regulators.

The LSE listing since 2016 means quarterly earnings, audited annual reports (PwC), and shareholder scrutiny that privately held brokers don't face. Market cap sits around GBP 900 million. UK clients get FSCS protection up to GBP 85,000, Canadian clients up to CAD 1 million through CIPF, and EU clients up to EUR 20,000.

With 1.7 million+ clients, over $35 billion in assets under custody, and GBP 100M+ invested in technology, CMC Markets has the infrastructure of an institutional player accessible at the retail level.

Platforms: Next Generation vs MT4 vs MT5

CMC Markets offers three trading platforms plus TradingView integration. The flagship Next Generation platform is web-based and genuinely impressive — TradingView-powered charts with 115+ drawing tools, Reuters news, Morningstar equity research, TipRanks analyst ratings, and a pattern recognition scanner covering 120+ technical patterns. Median execution speed: 0.009 seconds. No partial fills.

The catch: Next Generation doesn't support EAs or automated trading. For algorithmic strategies, you need MT4 or MT5. Both are available — MT4 offers 175+ forex pairs with spreads from 0.5 pips on major pairs, London-based servers, and full EA support with no scalping restrictions. MT5 is available particularly through the FX Active account.

The trade-off is real: MT4/MT5 gives you automation but a reduced feature set compared to Next Generation. The research tools, pattern recognition, and client sentiment data don't carry over to MetaTrader. Traders who don't need EAs are genuinely better served by Next Generation.

CMC Markets offers the most currency pairs of any retail broker — 330+ forex pairs (cash and forward contracts).

Instruments: 12,000+ Products, 330+ Forex Pairs

CMC Markets offers the most currency pairs of any retail broker — 330+ forex pairs (cash and forward contracts). Total instruments exceed 12,000: 80+ indices, 100+ commodities, 10,000+ share and ETF CFDs from 23 countries, 50+ treasuries/bonds, and 18-39 crypto assets (including crypto indices).

For comparison, most brokers offer 50-80 forex pairs and 1,000-3,000 total instruments. CMC's depth is particularly strong in share CFDs — access to 23 country markets means you can trade individual stocks from the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Japan, and beyond, all from one account.

Spread betting is available for UK and Ireland residents through CMC Spreadbet plc (FCA 170627), offering tax-free profits on the same instrument range. CMC Invest is a separate platform for real share ownership, ISAs, and SIPPs — commission-free with subscription tiers (Core free, Plus GBP 6.99/month, Premium GBP 10.99/month).

Fees, Spreads, and Account Types

Two main pricing models are available. The Standard account is commission-free with spreads from 0.5 pips on EUR/USD (typical ~0.7 pips). The FX Active account offers raw spreads from 0.0 pips on 6 major pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY) plus a commission of $2.50 per $100,000 notional value ($5 round turn). FX Active also gives 25% spread discounts on 300+ other forex pairs.

Professional accounts unlock leverage up to 1:500 but require meeting 2 of 3 criteria: 10+ significant trades per quarter, portfolio over EUR 500,000, or 1+ year professional finance experience. The trade-off is losing negative balance protection and FSCS eligibility.

The Alpha/Price Plus program rewards active traders with 5-40% spread discounts based on monthly volume, starting at GBP 25,000+ account balance. No minimum deposit is required for any account — $0 to start, though GBP 100 is recommended to cover margin.

Other costs: currency conversion 0.50%, credit card deposit fee 1% (Australia), no bank transfer fees, free withdrawals. The inactivity fee situation and overnight financing use SOFR-based rates plus markup.
