Each session carries a different risk profile. Regular hours attract institutional order flow, market makers, and algorithmic participants — all of which compress bid-ask spreads and improve price discovery. Pre-market and after-hours sessions, by contrast, operate with thinner books. A 2023 analysis of Nasdaq-listed stocks found that after-hours volume averages less than 5% of regular session volume for individual equities in the mid-cap tech segment.

For traders in European time zones (CET/CEST), the regular session begins at 15:30 or 16:30 local time depending on daylight saving. For Asia-Pacific traders (SGT/JST), the open falls at 22:30 or 23:30 local time — meaning full regular-session participation requires late-night trading.

The first 30 minutes after the 14:30 UTC open — 14:30 to 15:00 UTC — historically generate the highest intraday volume spike for U.S. equities, often accounting for 15–20% of the full session's volume. DOCU follows this pattern, with price discovery accelerating sharply at open as overnight positions unwind.

A second liquidity window appears in the final 30 minutes before the 21:00 UTC close. Institutional rebalancing and end-of-day order flow push volume back up, creating tighter spreads and more efficient fills.

The weakest liquidity period falls between 17:30 and 19:00 UTC — the midday lull. Spreads widen, order book depth thins, and slippage risk increases.
